Guest Post: The Importance of a Real Food Cleanse/Detox

So did anybody overindulge over the Thanksgiving holiday? Are the Halloween chocolate bars and candy at the stores starting to tempt you?

Vanessa Case, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, with whom I did a detox/cleanse last month approached me the other day and offered to do a guest blog post here about just that. Here's what she had to say:

The Importance of a Good Cleanse/Detox:

Thanksgiving weekend was a non stop feast of carbohydrates, sugar, delicious food and drink. Moving from one family member's house to another, a plethora of food awaits. Dallas is a great proponent of local eating, and this certainly helps in keeping things healthy during the holidays, enjoying local pumpkin, squash, root veg, and nature's harvest this time of year. But the temptations can be too much to bear when a family member shows up with that nacho dip, cheese tray, or pumpkin pie and willpower moves to the wayside! The holidays are celebrations that revolve around food as entertainment rather than nourishment, and really, what better way to socialize with friends than tantalizing your tastebuds with traditional holiday fare?

So let's face it, you overindulged (as did I) and Halloween is just around the corner and aisles are lined with tempting chocolate bars and sweet treats. Sometimes willpower is just not enough to get past a table full of lovely smells and visual eyecandy, or that bag of candy stashed in your cupboard. So, we need to accept the fact that we will likely overindulge and make a plan to move forward. So, quit feeling guilty, and do something about it!

That's right, overindulging isn't the "be all end all" taking us onto a path of food destruction, giving us permission to just let go of any health and wellness goals we have set for ourselves. It's time to detox!

Many people are intimidated by the word "detox" and all that it entails. Running for the bathroom in the middle of an important meeting, crazy juices and pills, and complete exhaustion just trying to keep up with your day? Absolutely NOT! So what does a good detox do for you and what should you expect? Food. That's it, that's all. In my opinion, a whole food detox using healing and cleansing foods will provide all that your body needs to get back on track. Your body detoxes very subtly everyday when you eat a whole foods diet but if you have overindulged, the body needs a little bit of help. So, it means eating a normal healthy diet, but in a structured way, to allow your body to not only release the toxins but also to eliminate them from the body.

For the first few days of your detox you are eating very low protein to allow the toxins to be released from the organs and fatty tissue, eliminating toxins, and eating a diet free of any potential irritants such as dairy, wheat, gluten, fried foods, alcohol, caffeine, and of course sugar. Eating as close to nature as possible and eliminating processed and packaged foods. Water and fibre are your best friends when detoxing helping to flush and bind the toxins out of your system allowing you to go from feeling bloated and blah to healthy and fabulous. You also want to take a close look at chemicals in your environment, beauty products, and daily life and beginning to make some changes. Exercise is also a crucial step to get the blood circulating, kickstart your lymphatic system, and get that metabolism working for you rather than against you. Over the course of a few days you will slowly move more proteins into your diet and begin a reintroduction program allowing you to eat all you had before, but in moderation and rotation.

Now, what can you expect at the end of your whole food detox? Energy you didn't know you had, a little bit of weight loss, and a brand new outlook on life with a body clean and fresh and ready to take on the days ahead!
