Rawthentic Chocolate at the Halifax Seaport Market

Did you know that chocolate is actually good for you? Yup, that's right! I'm not talking about milk chocolate or common chocolate bars that you find at the convenience store though. No, I mean 'real' dark, raw chocolate; chocolate bars that aren't filled with refined white sugar or soy lecithin and other crap. Chocolate that actually has chocolate in it.

Do you know what the ingredients are in your typical chocolate bar? Well, there's: SUGAR, MODIFIED MILK INGREDIENTS, COCOA BUTTER, COCOA MASS, LACTOSE, SOYA LECITHIN, POLYGLYCEROL POLYRICINOLEATE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOUR. Hmmm...I bet there isn't much actual chocolate in there.

If you've never tried 'real' chocolate you have no idea what you've been missing. Luckily I have access to some really, really great chocolate at the Halifax Seaport market on Saturdays. Rawthentic Chocolate has a booth there (with tons of samples!). Whenever we pass by their table my daughter is always sure to take a sample of each and every one.

Who can resist?

So what are the ingredients in the rawthentic chocolate bars? Well, in their Original Raw Chocolate Bar there is cacao paste, cacao butter, cacao powder, agave nectar, ground vanilla and stevia. And their fudge? Dates, cacao powder, cacao butter, and agave nectar. Only the good stuff.

The best part about eating 'real' chocolate is that you only need a little bit to satisfy. With conventional chocolate you just can't stop eating it and want more and more. With raw dark chocolate there is no need. You're immediately satisfied.

Do you still need more reasons to eat raw dark chocolate?

How about for the antioxidants? Did you know that raw cacao has more antioxidants than green tea, red wine, broccoli and blueberries! One thing to note, however, is that as soon as dairy milk is added, it cancels out the antioxidant effects by blocking absorption in the body. That's why dark chocolate is best.

How about vitamins and minerals? Cacao has very high levels of magnesium, iron and calcium. Again, as soon as you add sugar, the benefits are lessened because sugar decreases your body's ability to absorb these nutrients.

How about just because it tastes so damn good?

Today's chocolate purchase were the Chocolate-Orange Bliss Balls. My favorite!! They are melt-in-your mouth delicious!

To learn more, make your way out to the market on Saturdays (in Halifax and Wolfville) or check out their website here: www.rawthenticchocolate.com

You'll never buy conventional chocolate again! Promise!
